Things in Forks are changing rapidly. A new arrival, Bella Swan, has returned to Forks to live with her Father, Charlie, and her older sister, Alice. Most of the students at her new high school greet her warmly, except for a pair of the more popular girls, Lauren Mallory, who hangs around her only to help her own social standing, and Rosalie Hale, who merely gives her the cold shoulder.
Just a few months prior to her arrival, a new family came to Forks as well-Carlisle and Esme Cullen, their adopted sons, Edward and Emmett, and their “cousins”, Irina, Kate, and Tanya. They have settled in well to Forks, though they generally keep at a distance from the other people of Forks. Unbeknownst to any of them, every one of them is a vampire. But Bella has become curious about the group, especially Edward, and believes there is something odd about them. At the same time, she and Edward find a romance budding between them.
But the Cullens are not the only vampires around Forks. A group of four vampires have been building up an army of newborns in the nearby city of Seattle, with the plans of gaining as much territory as possible. With the Cullens’ arrival, they see the family as a threat, and aim to destroy them as soon as they can. The plans don’t settle well with one of the leaders, Jasper Whitlock, who has been trying to escape his duties. But the other three-James, Laurent, and Victoria-refuse to let him go, fearing they will lose control of the newborns if he does depart.
Each day the newborns draw closer to Forks. Already, students from the high school are going missing, and other residents have been found dead, seemingly killed by some Animals. At the nearby La Push reservation, some of the younger tribe members have begun to make the change into shapeshifters, preparing to defend their home and the humans against this new threat. They have become suspicious of the Cullens, thinking they are to blame for the deaths and disappearances.
The Newborn Army threatens everyone living in and around Forks. Will the Cullens be able to destroy it on their own? Or will they need to turn to others for help?
